Mayor of La Oliva comments about Las Caletas

I had a long conversation with Thomas Hardtmann regarding the EGM. During the chat he told me that he has been meeting with Claudina Morales, the Mayor of La Oliva. Surprisingly Las Caletas had only just come to the notice of the La Oliva Council. As soon as she was aware of our existence, she ordered a clean up of the area and large crews of Council Workers were to be seen tidying up the roads around the complex just as they have done throughout the island. Thomas is certain that these meetings will result in a traffic island. Thomas is also starting to refer to Las Caletas as a village. The significance of this is that villages attract support and investment from their local councils. I am not holding my breath on this one because it took Parque Hollandes 20 years to be recognised as a village - but we shall see.

On a broader note, Claudina will also take a personal interest in other development and infrastructure projects to ensure that they fulfil the plans that were passed and not the plans that they want to deliver. Our homes were built under the eye of the old administration who did not give much care for what was developed or whether it complied with plans.

It transpires also that Asturcana, the company who built Las Caletas are likely to become bankrupt. Their big projects around Parques Natural have stopped. This should not have any impact on us as the developers, Kaledat, should remain liable for any defects under the guarantee. We will need to see how this unfolds.

Developing The Web Site
We often get complaints that the site is not updated regularly but we cannot just make things up. It’s very difficult finding the information to keep the site up to date. Arthur and Anthea are not at Las Caletas full time and Pat and Eddie no longer live there although they do still own an apartment there. We need you, the owners to send us articles, raise issues and ask questions. We will once again attempt to get a monthly update from the administrator but we need you all to be our eyes and ears.

Are things happening that you are not happy about?
Are things happening that are good?
What events are taking place?
Have you visited anywhere that is worth sharing with other owners?

Etc, etc, etc

One of the things that we have discovered is that the fortnightly newspaper “Fuerteventura News” is no longer published in English. We have been onto the owner/publisher and unfortunately the English version has been withdrawn permanently. I think that most of you will agree that it was a useful source of information. Would you be interested, for example, in a monthly synopsis of the useful information from some of the other free publications? Are you interested in the golf or music scene on the island? Do you want to know about little bits of island culture or history?

Let us know email: residents@las-caletas.com

How Does Your Garden Grow

At 10a.m on Sunday 5th of March a group of men, women and children assembled in B block garden, the task looked simple complete the work on this section of the garden, by finishing the pecon, digging out drainage ditches, building flower beds, planting 400 plants O and I nearly forgot bringing in 22 tons of rocks and stones and about the equivalent of top soil.
By the end of the first day people were weary but undaunted, committed to returning the next day and continuing with the tasks set for them, and return they did an even earlier start was planned and for this and the following day people worked unremittingly, progress was slow and hard but gradually the shape of the garden was developing as was the community spirit, on the Tuesday evening this spirit was demonstrated by those who turned up to cook a barbecue for the by now somewhat dirty and exhausted volunteers.
For two more days the work continued all but at a steadier pace as aches and pains began to take there toll. On the Thursday evening people stood back to admire there handiwork which now mostly needed time and mother nature to add the finishing touches and of course all of our continuing interest and commitment in nurturing and tending what is after all our garden, so keep the plants coming, feel free to give David a hand in making the gardens bloom, and keep an eye on this site for the next project to be undertaken by the gardener’s army.

Thanks to the barbecue hosts it was so appreciated by us all, also to all of you who have sent cards and e-mails of support and appreciation. And many thanks to those of you who went and got your 40 free plants. It has taken a long time to go someway in correcting the mistakes made by the developers on this part of the garden, particularly how to deal with the fact that it is built over the garage, with no soil depth and no drainage and then to try and resolve these issue with little or no resources, but last week we achieved much resolving these problems Thanks to everyone who pitched in and helped.

March update on B block Gardens

Well we had a good week last week. A good turnout in the garden . I personally would like to thank all those who participated , and to all those who managed to go and get their plants. I now hope that people who come over especially with children will make sure that no-one goes on the gardens
after all the hard work that has been put in to make it look nice for all owners and friends alike. There is still a bit to do , as they say rome was not built in a day. I do hope that someone can take photo’s and put it on the las caletas forum, there has been people taking photo’s but I think it’s just holiday snaps for themselves. The water around the complex not working again, but what’s new. Keep the plants coming ,after all it’s your garden so anything we can plant will in time benefit all. This is just a quicky this month as there is still 2 weeks to go and still a lot to be done. So thank you all again and a special thank you to my father-in-law who at 75 years of age has been in the garden with me the last 3 weeks and he’s enjoying every minute .many thanks
Dave your green fingered gardener.

THE FINALE PUSH

Just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped with B block gardens last week (you know who you are) to those resident’s who were unable to attend I thought I would give you some facts on what was achieved
We collected (by hand) from surrounding area:
24 metric ton of rocks
18 metric ton of top soil
We planted over 300 shrubs
8 Drainage holes were drilled through to Garage to be connected to drainage piping

Also I would like to expel a few myths about B Block garden I have been an owner in B block since day one and find it very confusing when I hear some owners say I liked it better when it was grass!!!
I can tell you that since then I never saw any Grass I saw lots of bare patches of ground.

The facts are (and trust me I know) I have dug up said sole, that nothing would grow ever in that ground
It had no drainage so all anybody was doing when watering the area was to drown the plants, the ground was building rubble not top soil so the only way any one was going to have grass in that area was to lift all existing soil then replace with topsoil then grass seed it A cost which would be in access of 60.000 euros
What we did with volunteers is to make the Area plant able and look much more presentable
The cost to the residents was the hire of Dumper truck and some piping
Free of chare was all the volunteers, soil and stones and plants
If you don’t agree with my feelings please feel free to comment or offer a better solution
Below the pictures are of B Block in march 2003 and above is as it is now
I rest my case

As a resident (partime but as often as work allows) I would thank all those who gave of their green fingers (now no doubt blistered) and well strained muscles to work on B Block gardens . The pictures look great.

I know what it is like working on that soil having spent several days last June digging and spreading picon whilst I couldn't dive.

Looking forward to viewing in person in a few weeks when we hope to get ""more plants"" - don't worry Dave we will see what is wanted and then hopefully help with the planting.

Hope all are well out there

Chris Skepper
